This and EVERY SECOND WEDNESDAY of the Month, we’re asking our community to show up hungry — not just for great food, but for purpose. Canines for Heroes is proud to partner with Sonny’s BBQ for a delicious fundraiser that supports training elite service dogs for Veterans and First Responders battling PTSD and TBI.

How trained service dogs save local lives. We specialize in Special Forces with TBI, Veterans, and First Responders with PTSD.

Personal testimony from a recipient/Shirley: “In the heart of Sarasota, a beacon of hope shines brightly for veterans like me seeking solace and support in the form of a loyal four-legged companion. The Vet Center introduced me to Canines For Heroes, a program that pairs veterans with specially trained service dogs to help manage the challenges of PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and PNES (Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures). As someone who served in the Air Force from 1976 to 1980, I have spent decades managing seizures and navigating life’s complexities without the mental health resources available today. The passing of my daughter last year prompted me to seek counseling, and this newfound journey with my future service dog offers not only companionship but a pathway towards healing.

The transition from military service back into civilian life is an emotional journey filled with unique challenges. In the late 70s and early 80s, when I returned home from my Air Force service, discussions around mental health were sparse, leaving many veterans like myself without adequate support systems. This often resulted in years of silently struggling with issues such as PTSD—a condition once misunderstood but now recognized as a serious mental health concern affecting countless veterans. The introduction to Canines For Heroes by the Vet Center represents an exciting turning point for me; it embodies hope and provides tools for managing anxiety associated with open spaces and crowded environments—triggers linked both to my PTSD and seizure disorder.

Canines For Heroes offers more than just the companionship of a dog; it introduces highly trained canines that are attuned to their owner’s physical and emotional states. These intelligent creatures provide invaluable assistance by recognizing signs of distress or impending seizures before they occur. For those living with PNES like myself, this type of proactive alert system can be life-changing. Over time, these dogs become more than just helpers—they transform into steadfast partners on whom you can rely amidst daily challenges.”

Breakdown of how funds are used: We take no salaries. All goes to programming that supports our recipients and dogs.
